However, for maximum bandwidth, interference protection, or commercial installations running 10 Gbps over long runs, choosing shielded CAT6a is the ultimate robust choice.

Installation Best Practices

To get the best performance out of your network cables, consider these tips:

  • Respect Bend Radii: Keep cable bends gentle. Over-bending damages the precise twists of internal wire pairs. Once installed and at rest, keep curves to a minimum radius of 4x the outer cable diameter (~20mm for CAT5e, ~24mm for CAT6, and ~34mm for CAT6a).
  • Keep Away from Power Cables: Running data cables parallel to mains electricity can cause electromagnetic interference (EMI). Try to keep a distance of at least 50mm.
  • Don't Overstretch: While durable, excessive tension during installation can physically stretch the conductors and lead to connection failures.
  • Use Quality Connectors: Ensure your faceplates and patch panels match the category of your cable (e.g., use CAT6a modules with CAT6a cable) to maintain optimal link speed.
